This is the 5th book in the Cottage Tales series. This one occurs after Beatrix and the town are cut off from the world due to a snowstorm. There is a death, which appears to be accidental and the burning of a hay barn. There are mysterious markings on a tree nearby. The animals and Beatrix become involved in the mystery and there are some fantastical creatures as well. Beatrix's relationship with Mr. Heelis continues to develop slowly. A lovely, enjoyable book which I read quickly and was sorry when it was done. Tale of Hilltop Farm will always be my favorite of these Beatrix Potter stories, but this is a good mystery with lots of historical information and some talking animals. If you love Beatrix Potter, you will love this series. Susan Wittig Albert is a master storyteller (China Bayles Herb Mysteries and Robin Paige Mysteries)and she blends her mastery with a wonderful historical figure, Beatrix Potter.
actually made the potato soup recipe. It is really good. So is the book. Just a really fun read.

Once the author started addressing the reader directly, I totally lost interest. Boo-hoo.
