The Time Pirate (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

The Time Pirate is an exceptional sequel to Nick of Time.So much adventure! So much intrigue! As a note to parents: The story sometimes gets pretty violent, especially considering that a 12-year-old boy is shooting down Nazis from his tiny plane. There is warfare and battles that take place. The descriptions of these scenes are never gory, but provide a good enough illustration in your head for you to fully understand the violence taking place.Halfway through, I felt so much despair for the characters -- it pulled at my heartstrings. The author kept a amazing storyline going. In fact, a wonderful plot twist took place and transported me (and Nick, of course) back in time where more action would take place. We're talking about travelling the globe, and meeting important historical figures!Love this book. Perhaps even more than the first book.I hope the author writes another sequel. Soon, please? Nick and his sister are back for more time-traveling adventures. The invasion of the Channel Islands has begun in earnest, and the British government has decided to let them go rather than fight the Germans for them. Nick and some of the other island resdents are not inclined to surrender however, leading Nick to refit his father's Sopwith Camel for daring and dangerous raids. As if that weren't enough, pirate Billy Blood is still trying to obtain Nick's golden time-travel orb by any means, including kidnapping Kate.Alright, so I loved the first book in the series -- Nick of Time -- after all, what's not to love about pirates and Nazis in one book? But this book just is not up to the level I've come to expect. The seams between the various plotlines, which were very well-constructed in Nick of Time, are strained to the breaking point here, making the story seem disjointed and unbelievable. Some of the characters' actions are hard to rationalize, like, seriously Gunner letting a 12-year-old go out on a solo bombing raid? That is just insane. Or Nick feeling he has to help the Americans win the Revolution so they can be Britain's allies now? Dude, your logic seems faulty and contrived. Maybe it's because you're 12? And then there's the racism. Depictions of Native americans and African Americans are politically incorrect at best and turn-of-the-century at worst. Is there ever a reason to call someone an "ocataroon"? No, there isn't. My advice -- stick to the first book and pretend this one doesn't exist.

What do You think about The Time Pirate (2010)?

Great book -- He meets Martha Washington and she's not at all what she looks like in paintings!
