I always enjoy reading Peter Mayle. I had actually read this book several years ago, realizing it after I had started the book, and continued to read as I will read its sequel next. I enjoy the languid feeling I get reading these stories. Even actions that by necessity be hurried - identifying stolen wine bottles under the nose of the wine steward - seem calm because a good meal and fine wine will follow. I enjoy the descriptions of the food and wine interspersed throughout the telling of the story. Looking forward to the sequel, The Marseilles Caper. Good read. Very imaginative. I had no idea when I started reading it that I would love the character so much. I guess since I am not a lover of fine wines it was amazing to read about how some people know so much about wines that they would steal them. Also that there are such rotten people who want everyone to know that they have wonderful wines and that they are so very knowledgeable about the wines and wanted everyone else to look up to them.I found that this book covered the people who love fine wines and appreciate them for their flavor and taste. Then there are others who study wines and truly enjoy the wines each for their own qualities.I love Peter Mayle for his detail on the subjects he chose. He is a good writer.
Meh. Light mystery read, good for summer fun, but don't expect too much.
