The Whip [Audiobook/audio Cd] [Unabridged] (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Maybe I will go back to this at some point, since Charley (Charlotte) Parkhurst is a fascinating historical character. Just now one too many groan-worthy moments of dialogue (for example, the very contemporary swearing at the beginning) and heavy handed almost cliché descriptions of sexual encounters, abuse, etc. The rave reviews and awards make me think I wasn't reading the same book as everyone else. The first thing I want to say about this book is that while it is based on a real person the story is of fiction! Charley never told his story to anyone sadly. The whip is a story about Charley Parkhurst who was a Whip in CA during the 1800's. You can find a little information online if you search for it, but it won't match up to the book (which as I stated is fiction. With all that said, the book was amazing! Some part of me wishes that some parts of the story were true, and others not. Either way I was anxious to read every last word! The story and writing kept me captivated until the last page. This is a bit of a western, but I really feel that anyone could enjoy it even if you are not a huge fan of westerns.
