This was a Book Group choice and while it wasn't loved by all, it nevertheless sparked lively discussion because of atrocities depicted in some sections as well as the interesting characters in the novel. For myself, the 'jungle' chapters were riveting while the 'love interest' parts were dreadful. It felt like the author instinctively knew how to describe and bring danger to life, but had done a creative writing course with Mills & Boon in order to include some romance, in what was, otherwise, a really great story. "You had me at Hello" - Jerry MacguireFrom the first chapter to the last this novel 'The White Mary' captivates all senses and emotions. Writer, Kira Salak, takes us on a journey of self-awareness, discovery, acceptance and the giving up of one's self that leads to being in the moment, seeing truly what is important in life through living totally by survival. Where is Papua New Guinea (I had to look it up), the main setting for Marika's quest, remote to say the least. She brought us into this jungle and out immersing us in everyday events and climates the natives endure daily without a thought of comfort, for this is their life. Through her descriptive recordings of travels over a remarkably untamed land along with her journalism assignments one can precisely see what a sheltered life we live. 'The White Mary' is a first class story that will not be forgotten. Five stars for a thought provoking adventure without leaving my comfy reading chair.
