The Wonder Of Charlie Anne (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
"That's right,' said Rosalyn, 'Sometimes, though, doing without makes people bitter. And sometimes, instead of seeing the wonder of another person, all they see are differences.""Everything has a song, a kindness, if you just take the time to listen, she told me one night when she was pushing me on my old swing in the elm tree by the barn."I love this book. I'd actually give it 7 out of 5 stars. It tells an amazing story of redemption and kindness (though there is plenty of heartache woven throughout. Charlie Anne is such a spunky narrator. Her family is going through a rough spot. Her mother has died, the Great Depression has her family down on their luck, her father and brother have gone off to build roads, and Mirabel has come to look after the rest of the family. Charlie Anne's luck starts to turn around though, when her neighbor brings home a new wife and daughter. The little girl, an African American, is Charlie's age and the two become friends. This is a great story about friendship and healing as well as learning to accept that life is not perfect, but you can make the best of it. I would suggest a couple other novels to go along with this, Moon Over Manifest and The Best Bad Luck I Ever Had. I suppose you could argue they are too much alike, but I think each has a similar feel and deals with family problems, the Depression, race relations, and friendship in their own way.
