The Worst Witch Strikes Again (1991) - Plot & Excerpts

It's summer term at Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches and Mildred Hubble has been allowed to return despite her unfortunate first year there. Mildred is dreading this summer term, knowing that all sorts of mishaps could happen again, given how prone she is to accidents and messing things up. And now, she is bound by promises to do better after the terrible report her parents had received from the school. This term, a new girl named Enid Nightshade has joined Miss Cackle's and she has given Mildred the responsibility of showing Enid around the school for the next few days. Mildred's teacher Miss Hardbroom is stunned by this decision, thinking her favorite student goody-two-shoes Ethel Hallow should have been chosen. Even Mildred is a little surprised and not too happy about Miss Cackle's decision.Neither is Mildred's best friend Maud Moonshine. When she asks Mildred to hand Enid over to another girl and Mildred refuses, Maud walks off in a jealous huff, even though both girls think that Enid looks to be a pretty boring girl.Boring, that is, until the next morning when Mildred discovers that instead of the permitted cat, Enid has a monkey in her room. And that is just the beginning of accident-prone Mildred's summer term of chasing a runaway monkey, trips to Miss Cackle's office and a performance that even surprises Mildred and Enid at the end of term assembly. There's even a good lesson on friendship for Maud. But the biggest lesson of all is to not judge a book by its cover or the new girl at school by the way she looks. This is the second fun book in the Worst Witch series, perfect for young readers ready to tackle chapter books, and too young for Harry Potter. This book is recommended for readers age 7+This book was an E-ARC received from Net Galley

I love it!!! This time Mildred gets put in charge of a new girl named Enid Nightshade. As a second-year-witch she should be good enough to direct her to the right and proper way of being a witch. Nope, not at all! Maud tells Mildred to play a very nasty prank on her. Mildred says it would be to mean for a new girl. Maud gets mad and becomes friends with Ethel Hallows. Ethel locks Enid and Mildred in the broom closet (or some storage room. Soon they find a way out. But it was in the middle of celebrating Miss. Cackles birthday. They had to right poems. Maud felt a little sorry for them about getting in trouble for being late so she said that it was a part with them in it. Mildred and Enid was on a broomstick flying around the ceiling. Enid was flying the broomstick and Mildred was on the back doing a cool pose. And yes, you were probably wondering about Tabby, Mildred's cat. Tabby still can't ride on a broomstick properly. Tabby always holds on to the back of the broomstick as tight as Tabby can and shuts his eyes. Ethel Hallows is still goody-two-shoes and is still perfect at everything! I will still continue to love these books and always will!!!

What do You think about The Worst Witch Strikes Again (1991)?

This is the second book, in The Worst Witch series. As always it follows the school life of Mildred Hubble, the "worst witch". The book starts off where the first book left, or rather, on the next term. The book spans the course of the term at lightning speed, indeed it is so short that no sooner have you picked it up you will no doubt have finished; forty minutes to read it aloud would be plenty I think. There is a new character, Enid Nightshade, she is big and mischievous, and as Mildred has to escort her about whilst she is new, trouble and scandal are around every corner. Not that Mildred ever needs a great deal of help finding such things. Not a great deal really happens in the book, though it's written well enough and is good for what it is, hence the indifferent rating. There are four comic troublesome incidents in the book, loosely roped together in the term, with the common feature of Mildred and Enid being involved, and that's about the size of it. The illustrations are lovely and it will hold a child for a bedtime story, but lacks depth for an adult reader.

The second book in this series, and Mildred strikes again.I must say, that I really disliked the new girl and also Maud. I thought Maud was Mildred's best friend, but as soon as Mildred has a job to do, she gets jealous and runs off to the meanest girl in the school, Ethel. I really wanted to smack Maud through the book. Then we have Enid, who seemed like a good girl, but is actually even worse than Mildred. Not only in being a witch, but also with getting in trouble. Poor Mildred, doing her best to do well at school, only to get in trouble for something she didn't do. :(But all in all, it was a fun book, because like the previous book, Mildred does something awesome and it is all good. And of course, who can resist a good detailed story and lovely illustrations.

Author/Illustrator: Jill MurphyFirst Published: 1980Series: Book 2 of 7We read The Worst Witch Thursday night, in one sitting, sight unseen. Neither of us had any idea what we were getting into - neither the 7yo, nor I, had crossed The Worst Witch series. So they are turning into a pleasant surprise.Friday night and "The Worst Witch Strikes Again" is read in a single sitting - approx 1 hour. Engaged, interested, worried, pleased, the 7yo hangs on each word, predicting outcomes, remembering previous events, and linking the narrative to her life. That's what I want.A good book about friends, particularly the potential exclusivity, being a follower, and honesty. All issues that are important to my daughter right now.Series:Book 1 The Worst WitchBook 2 The Worst Witch Strikes AgainBook 3 A Bad Spell for the Worst WitchBook 4 The Worst Witch All at SeaBook 5 The Worst Witch Saves the DayBook 6 Worst Witch to the RescueBook 7 The Worst Witch and The Wishing StarAge:Read aloud: 6+Read yourself: 8+ (some tricky words)References:W'pedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wors...Interview with Jill Murphy: http://booksforkeeps.co.uk/issue/136/...(ISBN 9780141314501)-CR-
