I am in one way the perfect person for this meganovel and, in another way, not at all the right person. The right thing about me is that I am an ex-lawyer and, therefore, can enjoy the detailed, arcane accounts of legal cases and hearings. The wrong thing about me is my age: after finding De La Pava’s casually fluid writing highly entertaining, I came to sections that I found sophomoric, intellectually and in the sense of contemporary movies for young men. That’s what made me put the novel aside. The author’s brilliance makes me hope for something both more and less for someone like me. I have to say that there are some incredible reviews of this book, and I'm not sure I have much to add. Just go read Joshua Nomen-Mutatio's review, and you will get the gist of why I was fascinated by this book. One thing I do want to add, though, is that the author perfectly encapsulated the frustration of working in the US legal system, especially if your side is the one that seems to have everything stacked against it. Brilliant.

Stupendous. I mean, seriously. Masterful. And it's a first novel!

The Wire meets Don DeLillo. A wonderful, big, ambitious novel.
