May I present my Duchess?” When the receiving line broke up, Gideon led Sabrina behind Grandmama to the top of the stairs. As the announcer intoned, ‘The Duke and Duchess of Stanthorpe,” Gideon covered Sabrina’s hand on his arm and squeezed it. “Chin up, Beautiful,” he said as they descended the long graceful stairway into the ballroom. The entire assemblage—hundreds of them—stopped talking. Some even appeared to stop breathing, simply to watch them descend. Sabrina’s heart quickened. “Everyone is staring.” “They are savoring the sight of the most exquisite woman in England,”
