Unwilling Accomplice LP, An (2014) - Plot & Excerpts
Bess Crawford is an independent, self-assured nurse working for the Nursing Service during WW I. She is asked to take a patient, Sgt Jason Wilkins to an awards ceremony hosted by King George himself. Unknown to Bess, Jason Wilkins has his own reasons for asking Bess to escort him. Not only does he go AWOL after the ceremony, he is accused of murdering another soldier. Nurse Bess Crawford becomes "an unwilling accomplice" when she is accused of dereliction of duty. In order to clear her name, Ms. Crawford starts a search to find Jason. A easy to read, enjoyable mystery with a lot of insights into life in England during WW I. This book was just okay. There is way too much "hither and thither" - deep into the deprivations of wartime, one has to wonder how Bess and Simon could afford to burn all of the "petrol" they do gallivanting around the countryside on their unofficial investigation - and there is no progression in their relationship (?) or characters. With Armistice looming, one also has to wonder what will happen with Bess post-war. If this English-set mystery is indicative of the future, the series is not looking too interesting.

Just don't like the Bess Crawford series as much as the Ian Ruttledge.
