Mom buttered her toast as she looked at me across the table. “You two haven’t had another falling out, have you?” She was referring to the brief time Emily and I had broken up after I cheated with Anna Blakely. “No, Mom.” I grabbed my orange juice, sucking it down. My throat felt dry despite the liquid. “Everything’s fine. We’re still together.” That was only half true. We were still boyfriend and girlfriend, yes, but everything wasn’t fine. Nothing was fine. It had been two weeks since that awful afternoon in my bedroom, where I’d watched helplessly as the man I’d always thought of as my dad took my girlfriend’s virginity.
