I would rate this 2.5 stars. I picked it because it's about a family taking in their niece as a foster kid. :-) It's all about family secrets and figuring out the past - the high school boy's past tragedy in a fire, and family events in the holocaust. The fire was waaaaay over-explained, way too many times, even within the same chapter. I GET IT, I GET IT!! I also thought it interesting that it is labeled (library sticker) as "Christian Fiction" - because the family attended church, they talked about God a couple times, and... there was no swearing? But it is a nice light read, which was what I wanted this time! Our society is filled with people who look good on the outside, but who are hurting deeply on the inside. Why do people try so hard to look good? Because there is a Liar who makes us feel like it is easier to pretend everything is okay than it is to work through the tough stuff. Let's face it, we often follow the path of least resistance. But such paths often make life harder, more secretive, and miserable. Susan Meissner explores the consequences of such a path, as well as the blessings that come when a family faces truth and chooses light over darkness.

This was an unusually good book. There was a Christian slant, but it wasn't over-done.
