Why We Love Dogs, Eat Pigs, And Wear Cows: An Introduction To Carnism: The Belief System That Enables Us To Eat Some Animals And Not Others (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

The title is misleading, but I should have known about the word "carnism" in read. The outline seemed plausible, but then her reasonings and explanations were ... attacking to people who eat meat and graphic. I really don't need to hear about these things, and it will ultimately turn away people interested in veganism or vegetarianism. Haven't you heard you catch more flies with honey? (Well, those are two things you are against, anyway.) I know we need to tell the truth, expose it and let others experience it so they know what goes on to get them their meat. But I don't think belittling people does the trick. By chapter 2, I was done. I basically skimmed it to see if there was some hope, but nope. And I "love" the resources at the back. I think the author had more pages of resources than notes! I mean, as a journalist, it bothers me when she made statements to make her case and they sounded like fact -- but there was no attributions! I can say "meat makes you stronger," but it isn't true if I don't have the well-noted research to back me up! I wanted some good, scientific answers to "why we love dogs, eat pigs and wear cows," but there are very little in this book. This is a great book if you're considering veganism, or you need something to keep you vegan when you began to falter. A lot of people have said the author was too "pushy", but if you don't think that animals should be slaughtered for just a few minutes of our pleasure, you won't think she's pushy at all. If you want to use that as an excuse not to go vegan I don't know what to say to you.I do wish she would have told us when she would graphically describe torture, but I suppose that's what gets the point across to carnists. And for all the people who say "vegans don't care about animals!!!" she goes to great lengths to talk about the psychological affects of working in a slaughterhouse on often marginalized people. I gave the book three stars though, because it came off to me as one of those PETA ads; shock and that's it. She did provide some good resources, (which I will definitely go back to) but frankly I thought I was going to get a more all inclusive look at veganism.

Required reading for feminists. Picks up where The Sexual Politics of Meat leaves off.
