SO MUCH BETTER THAN VOLUMES 3 AND 4. In this volume, Eren has been in a coma for three days after he turned into a titan and plugged the whole in Wall Maria. He awakes in a dungeon, and Commander Erwin Smith is there, along with Captain Levi and a few other important members of the Survey Corps. Apparently, the government is afraid that he is on the titans' side. The Survey Corps want to use Eren's "Titan Powers" to attempt to reclaim territory outside of Wall Rose. Eren is put on trial to decide whether to place Eren in the custody of the Military Police Brigade or the Survey Corps. The Military Police wish to perform scientific experiments on him, and then they will execute him. It is decided that he will be placed in the custody of the Survey Corps, and he is to work alongside Captain Levi. The second half of the book focuses on the Training Corps deciding which branch of the military to join. Mikasa, Armin, Jean, Connie, Krista, Sasha, and a few others decide to join the Survey Corps. A month after this, everyone in the Survey Corps sets out for an expedition outside the walls to get to Shiganshina District and find Eren's basement. It is believed that Dr. Jaeger was doing work with titans, and that the secret to beating them is found in the basement. Due to the gate that was closed with a giant boulder, they will be forced to go the long way.At the end of the book, a titan that possesses human-like intelligence is found. Armin sees it and comes to the conclusion that it is a human inside of a titan's body, and that they are trying to get to the center of the formation-- right where Eren is located! Attack on Titan is a manga that brings nothing new to the shounen genre, yet it nevertheless handles all the necessary elements with great care, thus creating suspense throught the happening in every single volume. The fifth volume is no exception, the only difference being that the suspense turns from action to verbal and at the end back to action. Isayama knows how to handle mystery as well. He just gives the reader bits of information, thus creating more questions than answers. If you enjoy fantasy, action, adventure, bloody battles and shounen titles in general, then Attack on Titan is the manga for you. It just contains the best of shounen genre and is avoiding most of the cliches this genre is full of. It is a suspensful and exciting ride, even when the physical action is narrowed down to verbal actions. Just genius.
