100 Heartbeats: A Journey To Meet Our Planet's Endangered Animals And The Heroes Working To Save Them (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Wonderfully insightful read addressing the state of endangered species around the world and the often unsung efforts to rectify this terrible situation.A must read for anyone who likes, loves, or cares about animals, the environment and the world as a whole.Corwin obviously knows his stuff when it comes to the science, but he doesn't blind the reader. I found it extremely easy and a joy to read. He explains about ecosystems and how the balance works, if people don't understand why seemingly unrelated things have an impact on wildlife in an ecosystem, then it is understandable that they don't see what's wrong with it. If there was one comment I might make, in my edition, there are a number of photos, fantastic photos of the author with some of the animals he talks about in the course of the book. I personally would have liked to see them scattered throughout the book. But that is completely a personal preference and in no way detracts from the great work that this is. In his dedication, if I remember correctly, he talks about his daughter being the motivation for his work, and that is such a powerful thought. We should all be similarly motivated. This book helps. This book is important. Please, read it, absorb it and support the work that is happening in conservation, for all our sakes. I love Jeff Corwin. While Steve Irwin was out there (albeit trying to save the animals) being invasive, Jeff Corwin has been in the background, a true naturalist, fighting for those who don't have a voice. I've seen him speak in real life and even got my picture taken with him. However, I happen to be mid-squat ready to sit down next to him when the picture was snapped, so I look like a complete buffoon. But it was worth it, anyway. This book made me cry and even made me laugh in a couple of parts, especially when he told a story about a rhino that they thought was standing in deep water. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens next. This book is heartbreaking, and I wish I could put a copy of it in the hands of every person I ever meet. We all need our hearts broken if we're going to start to care about something so vital.
