The war of 1812 was always forgotten compared with other wars like the Civil Wars, but, this war changed the history. In this war, the US Navy with meager number of ships beat the mighty Royal British Navy with nearly 1000 ships and fought to a draw. From then on, the maritime superpower, began to shift from UK to the United States, making into the world order today. And America that time stabbed Britain at back, because that time, Napoleon was winning in Russia and Iberia, and America could take chance to unify with Canada.1812, is the war of the birth of American superpower, beginning of a new era. After this war and the civil war, it was Americans time to take the world...A milestone of human history. Daughan recounts the stories of America's Navy Captains and their triumphs at sea during the War of 1812. President James Madison didn't expect much (or anything) from the U.S. Navy but with their victories he was able to capitalize and push the American agenda forward. Why I started this book: My goal is to tackle the Navy's Recommending Reading list this year. Plus, all I remembered of this war from school was that the British burned Washington and that the battle of New Orleans happened after the peace treaty was signed. Why I finished it: Very interesting audio. Loved the information about American vs. British nautical practices and Daughan did an excellent job of putting everything in a wider world context.
