21.12 (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I liked the connection made between medical (hard science research) and linguistic/anthropological (soft or human sciences research) ways of thinking. I also found the idea of each person getting an animal totel with which he/she completely identified at birth, an interesting one. It's like having your own personal role model from the day you are born. If it is the right one for you, and does not limit you, then it can be a good anti-dote to the conformism of modern society. Maybe.Peace, ShiraDestinieUniversal Date: Tuesday, 7 November 12014 H.E. (Human/Holocene Era) For personal reasons I chose to read this book because of the prion angle. He seemed to have created a "superprion" (infectious protein particle) that did have the ability to cause devastating damage, as hinted at in the text. The focus however was on finding the source and curing the prion using a mixture of science and of Mayan mythology. I applaud the science/myth mix. I applaud the main characters doing the right thing for society despite personal harm (and they were rewarded at the end anyway.) But something did not feel right about the book. I was not interested in finishing it, though I did. I felt like it was missing something and trying to do too much at the same time. As a result it wastes the idea of a "superprion."
