I feel I'm a bit generous to give this book 4 stars, probably 3 1/2 would be more accurate, but it was very readable and enjoyable, and I wanted to turn each page to see what would happen. The plot was good and full of twists and turns. Unfortunately I found the characters shallow which let the book down: apart from the actual plot I didn't have a real interest in the writing or in what happened to the people in it.I can always tell if I really enjoyed the actual writing by asking myself if I want to read the book again, and look for gems that I might have missed first time round. This book is not one of those pieces of writing, it is a good story but not good literature, more what I would call an "aeroplane read". An unfinished letter is the only clue Tara and Emerson have to the reason behind their close friend Noelle's suicide. Everything they knew about Noelle--her calling as a midwife, her passion for causes, her love for her friends and family--described a woman who embraced life. There was so much they didn't know.I love Diane Chamberlains's novels. They always have an element of surprise at the end and she did it again. I thought I had it figured out close to the end, but she surprised me again.

Very good books about three friends. Lots of twists, especially at the end.
