Leigh did not make it downstairs until past nine o’clock, a thoroughly unusual occurrence. When she finally did wander into the kitchen, she was startled to find Brian sitting with Robert over coffee at the breakfast table, and a pile of envelopes at the place where Leigh always sat. “What’s going on?” she asked warily. To her knowledge, Brian never left the house later than seven in the morning. “And what’s this?” She pointed to the stack of envelopes. “Invitations,” Brian answered absently. “I think it’s time you got out of this house, Leigh. Pick no more than two a week, and let me know the dates and times.” “But what are they for?” Robert placed a small bowl of cereal and a plate of toast in front of her, and that was even more bewildering. “And what do you think you’re doing, waiting on me?” she scolded him. “I don’t want to go to any of these shindigs,” Brian continued bluntly.
