It had been no trick at all to collect the colonel’s gaming debts. His debtors were happy to release them. They had doubted if Tarleton would ever pay. Some believed that, even if he did find a wealthy lord for his daughter, those gentlemen wouldn’t be as generous as Tarleton expected them to be. After all, Stowe and the others were not fools.
