This was a ok read. Marty Singer is no Harry Bosch, Lincoln Perry, Patrick Kenzie, Elvis Cole, or Joe Pike. Singer is a washed up retired police detective with more than 30 years of experiance. He is retired because he has cancer. In the ninties, Singer and his partner got yo investigate a police shooting that may have been a homicide. The killer walked but Singer was convinced it was murder.Fast forward a little over 10 years... Singer is just retired because of cancer. He is approached by the daughter of the woman who died. She tells him that the man who killed her mother is stalking her now.Singer tells her he will look into it. More lucky than a good detective, Singer basically spends 80% of the book trying to find the former cop who killed the woman's mother, who no one has seen for years. That ending was unsatisfying. (Spoilers below)Most of that, Marty Singer spends trying to get the guy to show himself, or getting treatment for his cancer or sleeping with the guys lawyer whom he really despises.then it turns out that the guy is dead... What???It really was upsetting that this guy turned out to be dead not recent but for years. No record anywhere of his death. I understand that they had a hard time identifying him but they did. There was no record anywhere when they searched for him. 80% of the book was going no where. Truly disappointed. The guys step-sister knew it but Marty Singer did not have the resorses to find out something that Elvis Cole, Lincoln Perry, or Patrick Kenzie (All private detectives) would have found out on day on day one. Overall the book was ok so 2 stars but I will not be picking up anymore in this series. 3.25 of 5The story started slow and it took me two tries to get into it, requiring setting my Audible player to 1.25 or 1.5 speed at points, which I think may be more because of the narrator than the writing. The writing was above average and the narration wasn't terrible by any means.Following Marty Singer, a retired policeman battling cancer and solving crimes, was a welcome change of pace for me. In summary, a good solid first novel and strong enough that I intend to read the other books in the series.
What do You think about A Reason To Live (2012)?
A good read with the kind of ending I like. I would read another by this author.
