A Rural Affair. Catherine Alliott (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
Very pleasant, easy-going novel about Poppy, whose dull husband is killed in a freak accident involving frozen waste from an airplane. It turns out Phil wasn't all that dull, having amassed a fortune while romancing another woman for four years. All kinds of mild complications ensue, many related to the news that Poppy is going to be a rich woman. There are many humorous bits, including a depiction of a book club that starts off reading a thriller by Robert Harris, only to be derailed by new, high-brow members who persuade the club to read "Ulysses". The club barely survives, and the high-brow people turn out not to be all they seem. A relaxing read, way better than "Ulysses," imho, but not strong in likelihood. I enjoyed this book. It wouldn't do for a steady diet, but it's a treat. I wanted to really like this book, but I only "liked" it! The story was good and there interweaving story lines for the individual characters were easy to follow too, but I did find at some parts the story did drag and there seemed to be no realy conclusions,(maybe there's a follow up that I don't know about).I think this was the first Catherine Alliot book that I've read and it's certainly made me think about reading her other books.
