A Scary Scene In A Scary Movie (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This book was beautiful. I picked it up expecting it to be this wild, supernatural horror movie affair, but what I got was a lot better. I loved how this novel not only portrayed a type of character that you don't often see; a high functioning, highly intelligent introverted autistic; but also portrayed it in a way with no judgement, in a light that reveals what it is really like to be inside the mind of someone with that kind of ability. I myself am an autistic in a very similar manner to Rene, and I see a portrait of myself in the character. It's like looking into a mirror and having my soul reflected back. Most of the time, books like this are terrifying, because it looks like a portrayal of a high functioning autistic in the very worst of lights, but this one is different. This is a simple statement of "I am what I am" and it's hard to accept that because the world is so different, wants YOU to be so different, and you can't achieve that because this is just how your mind works. I recommend this book to everyone; it is an eye opening experience. And I thank you, Mr. Blackstone, for making me feel like I am not all alone in the universe. I've looked at some of the reviews already made and they don't seem to be matching up with the book I read. As a 16 year old, I can say that these characters DO act their age. I personally don't act my age; I do not act like the typical 16 year old girl. They're just teenagers trying to find their place in the world. If you didn't notice, Giovanni acts like he's older and wiser and cooler than he is (a typical teenage trait), but when they get to NYC, he lacks the experience and knowledge to balance his spending with his budget. Giovanni also spends time at a senior center or nursing home, I'm assuming he's picked up some habits which would explain some of the phrases he uses. Also, Rene has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Everyone has a little and his isn't even the worse I've heard or read of, but you can imagine how that would cause him to do things he wouldn't necessarily do at his age if it wasn't NECESSARY. Rene really isn't that different in my eyes. His parents are split up as are Giovanni's parents, as are many parents. I'd say unfortunately, but in this case and most, the parents splitting up is for the better. Phil's a jerk and because of his age and OCD, Rene deals with Phil's return in a distinctly teenage manner. And Ariel...well, I've read reviews of her being described as flat. This is certainly untrue of this character. Rene has painted a picture of this beautiful flawless girl whom he loves to the moon and back except he's only ever viewed her from afar until they meet her in NYC. Compared to her sisters, Ariel is quiet and reserved. Her sisters are more developed in the personality department and have more confidence than her. This is probably due to the fact that Ariel is younger than them. When it's just Ariel and the boys, you pick up some traits that make her more real.A side note: I like how Matt Blackstone shows that everyone struggles. Giovanni, Rene, the teacher, their parents, Ariel, and all the other characters show flaws throughout the entire book, even after Rene calls Ariel "the Angel of Angels". Giovanni may be cool, but he can't get them out of NYC. Rene suffers from OCD. Their teacher can't stand his job and seems overly stressed; he keeps giving up and I'm starting to believe he may be a bit depressed.
