After Jasper and I finally managed to get up, we showered and ate, then spent the rest of the night just holding each other on the couch. The next morning, he told me to wait until he came home and we’d start looking for something of Allen’s together. I didn’t think there was much point of searching anymore, but I agreed. The court date wasn’t until the beginning of December so we had more than a month before a judge would hear it, but we needed to find DNA for a paternity test or things were going to get complicated. By the middle of the week, I was forced to admit that complicated was going to be my new life. There was nothing. Nothing of Allen’s left in the house aside from a couple books and other things we’d shared. While getting a fingerprint from a lot of those things would’ve been possible, none of them had what I needed. Finally, at dinner Thursday night, I said what I’d been thinking all day. “I have to go talk to the Lockwoods.” Jasper swore under his breath and set down the beer he’d been drinking.
