A Witch's Handbook Of Kisses And Curses (2013) - Plot & Excerpts
I thought this was a cute, light read, and I enjoyed it enough to want to read Molly Harper's other books! I had not read the other books in the series, so I was not familiar with the back stories of the other characters, although I thought the author did a good job of acquainting me with them enough that I would like to read their stories, as well! Nola Leary is a healing witch in Ireland, where she works at her family's clinic. Upon her deathbed, Nola's grandmother tells her that she must locate four missing artifacts by a certain time or the entire family's magic will be lost. The artifacts were given by her grandmother to her lover, Nola's grandfather, and Nola has to go to Half-Moon Hollow, Kentucky, to try to retrieve them and complete a ritual to ensure that the magic isn't lost to following generations. Her grandfather owned a mystical bookstore, which he left to a very interesting woman. Nola's next door neighbor may not be all that he seems, either! If you enjoy a good laugh and were-creatures and vampires, this will be a fun, lighthearted read! Nola Leary was chosen by her Grandmother on her death bed to be the leader of their small coven. One that is mostly compiled up of her many aunts, uncles and cousins. They live in Kilcairy, Ireland and mix magic with modern medicine to heal the local villagers at their family run clinic. They do not make a lot of money but are content knowing that they are making a difference. Before she died, her grandmother made Nola promise that she would go to Half Moon Hollow to collect four ancient artifacts that had been passed on for generations. She had given them to Nola’s grandfather when he left many years ago requesting that he keep them safe. Nola’s grandfather is none other than Mr. Wainwright. A grandfather that Nola had never met nor had she ever heard anything about. It was a secret that her grandmother had always guarded so no one in the family knew who had fathered her daughter, Nola’s mom. Time is of the essence though because she must find all four artifacts before the winter solace in order to keep a binding intact so that her family does not lose their powers. To make matters worse, Nola isn’t the only person looking for the artifacts and the others will do anything and hurt anyone to get to them first. This was book 2 in the Half Moon Hollow series which is a spin off from the Jane Jameson’s series. True to Molly Harpers books it’s filled with quirky characters that are laugh out loud funny at times. Many of my favorites were back in this book such as Jane, Andrea and Dick which made the book just that much better. If you’ve read the Jane Jameson series you know that Mr. Wainwright was Dick’s grandson which makes Nola the granddaughter that he never knew about. This makes for some extremely funny moments he first finds out as well as after since he decides not to tell Nola about his history with Mr. Wainwright. While it wasn’t that difficult to figure out some of the issues that were arising there were still some surprises but even without them, this book and series will go on as one of my favorites. I’ve already purchased Undead Sublet which is 2.5 and took some investigative work to find since it is not sold as a stand-alone. It’s actually sold as a novella inside of a series called The Undead in My Bed by Katie Macalister and is the second story within that book. Happy reading!
