I've been seeing this book on lists and kept passing it by because the cover. After passing it on so many top ten lists I finally read the blurb and saw it was teacher/student/religious, I'm not a big fan of those kinds of books so I just passed it by again. I'm not sure why I eventually gave this book a chance but I am so glad it I did. I've read thousands of books but this one is so rare. Being inside the head of Michael: reading all his thoughts, ramblings, and emotions - It's so captivating. Regardless of how skeptical I was about the themes of the story, I couldn't help but be pulled into the relationship and loving how it develops. The writing is spectacular. I highlighted so many pieces of this book. Normally when a story pulls me in, I am rushing through the book, wanting to know what happens next - with this book, I took my time reading, simply appreciating words. I cannot wait to start the next book I would describe as a narrative of events rather than a straight weaving of a story - no less compelling in parts or overly wordy at times for that. Perhaps a bit too much introspection for me, but the story is about feelings so it is to be expected.The topic can be seen as taboo, though I thought it was fine. The story is set in the UK (where I am based too) and whilst the legal age of consent is 16, sex with someone under 18 is illegal by someone in a position of trust ie: a teacher. Dominic is just shy of 18 and we manage to skirt illegalities in the story.The narrative is by Michael, the teacher, so we go through all his thought processes but only hear Dominic's conversations with his 'Mr Cassidy'. I did like story but it was perhaps a bit too 'thoughtful' for me to fully engage in.
