Acquainted With The Night (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
Beautiful. I'm still reeling from it beautiful.I expected a short, badly edited, smoking hot smutty story to spend a cloudy day with. I was wrong. Very wrong. I read a few of Tymber's ménage books several years ago and wasn't impressed enough to continue with her work. I can't remember having a problem with the few I read but found other authors I enjoyed more. Now I'm wondering if I missed something. I only picked this up due to a friends review. I do realize the author's writing has greatly improved since then. This is going to stay with me and will probably be read again. I can't figure out how to review it though. Anything I say will ruin it. I cried, boy did I cry. Several times, for different emotions. Heartbreak and joy are both here with one of the most pure loves it's been my pleasure to read about. It's an alien scifi so you will have to suspend belief about some anatomical problems with the human body but just go with the serum and shots they are given as changing their body chemistry a bit and you'll be fine. Don't get caught up in those details. Just enjoy these men, both human and alien and the love they share. We'd all be a bit better with a love like that. There were a few times as I was reading "Acquainted" that I almost put it in my DNF stack. It had all my favorite sci-fi erotica ingredients: hot aliens, sweet Earthers, mpreg, menage (and more)....What could go wrong? Well...Dale tells the story of his abduction by the Algonquans, and his subsequent purchase by 'Master' who bought him to keep Mark, Master's other pet, company. But he tells it all in 1st person POV, and his narration is so dry and flat that he might as well be describing a rather boring vacation trip. There is tons of sex...sex with Master, sex with Mark, sex with Master and Mark...and eventually sex with Master, Mark, Cooper, and Nate (in varying combinations)....And of course we can't forget the eggs! ACK!!!But it's all delivered with a flat passivity that removes most of the heat. There are a few times when Dale's feelings surface, but they're few and far between. However, the entire work is turned on its head by the Epilogue (on my Kindle at 97%). There's some wicked reader whiplash as you transition from Kinky Alien Menage Story to...Kinky Alien Tearjerker. The narrator changes, and while the narrative style isn't much different, there's a huge emotional punch that gets you right in your gut, and sorta made me wonder why the author waited so long...

I'm sorry, but the cover. Revenge of the dismembered torsos?
