Admirals Penniless Bride (Historical) (2000) - Plot & Excerpts

A modern story wearing a regency costume. The characters spoke and thought in modern phrases. Kelly spent some time unsuccessfully trying to communicate Sally's modesty and abhorrence to lewd paintings and statutes, but all I'm convinced of is the author's preoccupation with sex and pornography. It's too bad because I really enjoyed the characters until they arrived at the manor, whereupon the story became almost entirely made up of descriptions of porn all over the house, references to wild harems and marital sex in full detail. Whoever claims this book is like a Jane Austen novel needs a slap in the face. I think I found a new favorite author.Clara Kelly creates a very emotional story, with lovable and real characters. Admiral Bright is retired from the navy and seeks a marriage of convenience since he want to get rid of his meddling sister. He asks the very desperate and poor Sally and they strike a bargain: he will take care of her financially and she will keep his sisters away and manage his estate (as in adding a woman's touch). In time they find out that they like each other and are attracted to one another, and a beautiful and very emotional story is created. The Admiral is battle scarred and Sophie is life scarred and they both try to heal each other. I love Kelly's ability to create real characters, with real emotions and flaws. Even her Alpha male, such as Admiral Bright, can be sensitive and cry. She also deals with real situations such as the ugly reality after war: widows, orphans, unemployment, amputation etc. I loved this book
