Danny’s empty chair mocked us all. Jack Schiller had merely laughed at my demand for information, further infuriating me. He’d followed the boys into the room with Danny’s body and I’d waited out in the hall, giving Lorelei a quick call to let her know the rest of the boys were okay and accounted for. The boys had come out by themselves, and I’d never gotten the chance to talk to the detectives—either one of them. Grace, our regular waitress, was beside herself when Saul told her about Danny. It was a good thing nobody wanted any food; it was all she could manage just to keep the coffee coming. And we drank a hell of a lot of coffee. Not that anybody was sleepy. But the caffeine helped to stave off the numbness felt over Danny’s death. “So,” I started, not wanting to broach the subject, but knowing it had to be done. “What are we going to do about a funeral? Do you want me to call Lorelei and have her come down here? She’d help us plan anything you want to do.” All four of them looked at me like I was crazy.
