Alaskan Fire (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

I received this book free from BookBub. Although it may seem silly, it took me a while to read it because I was thrown off by the cover art. It seemed cartoonish, and made me question the contents of the book itself. I'm glad I finally got to it, however, because this is a great book. Jack is a wereverine who has been living in tha Alaskan bush for a very, very long time. He has little ability to interact with others without being crude and mean. Blaze buys an abandoned lodge in his territory, with all of her recent inheritance and plans to turn it into a money maker. She hires Jack as her handy man, not knowing about his secret were nature. She finds out soon enough when Jack senses something "other" about her and threatens her to find out why she's entered his lands. Turns out Blaze believes she's fully human and has no idea what Jack is talking about. The story has a lot of depth to is, as Jack and Blaze come to a somewhat comfortable existence as they repair the lodge and Blaze slowly learns about her true nature. They also have to protect themselves against the local werewolf pack that is growing past sustainable levels. Some reasons other than just a compelling story that I really liked this book:1. The hero is a lot shorter than the 6 foot 4 inch heroine. Sometimes it's nice not having a paranormal romance with the big bad hero and the tiny helpless heroine.2. The story takes place over the course of a year. It's not 3 days of heart stopping action resulting in everlasting love.3. The hero is terrible with words. A lot of stories with long-lived heros has the men being smooth talkers who make women fall at their feet. Jack is mean to Blaze at every turn because he doesn't know how to act around her. This book kept my interest from start to finish. I'll definitely check out additional books from this author. I got this as a free e-book, and I loved it! It's technically a paranormal romance (the couple gets together by the end, and each book in the series is about a different couple), but it's much less formulaic than typical PNR. It's also LONG. This book could easily have been cut into two books, maybe three. You really get your money's worth buying this one. It's a unique take on contemporary fantasy. As someone who reads a TON of urban fantasy, I can say this with certainty. I've never read a book that I thought was all that similar to this one - it was refreshing and very entertaining. There were tons of funny scenes, but also scary ones and frustrating ones. You get to know the characters inside and out. I recommend it.Premise: Girl inherits, buys dream fishing lodge in the backwoods of Alaska, hires grumpy hot were handyman, nearly gets killed several times, finds out she's a supe, has lots of supe neighbors, defies the odds and eventually makes a successful business of the place, making some friends along the way.
