Alice's Adventures In Wonderland And Through The Looking-Glass, And What Alice Found There (2003) - Plot & Excerpts
So recently I checked out Alice in Wonderland with Through the Looking Glass as they are books we are discussing at the Reading for Pleasure book club here on Goodreads as Alice is our book club's classic group read for the month of June and Through the Looking Glass is the Book Club Buddy read that coincides with it. I got both of these for free on feedbooks and were both really short so I decided to read them both reading Through the Looking Glass after I finished Alice. I finally read both so can now give my short synopsis on them both separately. I'll give my final thoughts afterwards:Alice Adventure's in Wonderland: Alice in Wonderland is the story about a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole while chasing a White rabbit with a pocket watch and ends up in the weird, silly, and whimsical world of Wonderland where she meets up with a variety of characters from the Cheshire Cat, The Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter & March Hare, the Mock Turtle, a Hookah-smoking rude Caterpillar and more. Will she be able to find her way home? The only answer is to read on for yourself and find out.Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There: In Alice's second and final trip to Wonderland, she stumbles back into the realm of the silly through a Looking-Glass mirror where she encounters talking flowers, Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum, and many other weird creatures. If you want to know what happens next, be sure to read this for yourself. Both of these stories are best read one after the other as some of the characters you thought were in the first story are actually in the second one. They were both silly, weird and whimsical as well as reminded me of the Disney animated film and a 1999 film version that I saw starring Gene Wilder in it that were pretty good. This was my first time reading them both and all I can say is "They made me go curiouser and curiouser." My copy of both stories didn't have illustrations but just had the stories so definitely look for these books at your local library and wherever books are sold.
This is actually only my latest edition acquired of this wonderful book, and mine isn't even the one with the cool intros by Self & Smith; mine is the original edition from Sweden, but that's not listed here and I'm too lazy to add it.Anyway, what's left to be said about these books. If you've lived this long without reading them, your life's a poorer place. Of all the illustrated editions available, the Tenniel ones are those that should accompany a first read. However, being a Gormenghast AND Alice fan, this version offers the best of both worlds! Now I just have to find the one with these intros used...cuz I'm also a Will Self fan!
