Alone In Berlin (1946) - Plot & Excerpts

This was a good read. It was an interesting insight into life under Nazi rule from a very personal place. The characters are well developed and interesting. I think other commentators have states much about the plot and characters. For a book that came out just after the war, I think it provides important insights into how lower class Germans who weren't Nazi supporters (and some who were) lived during Nazi rule. Absolutely heartbreaking. A simple novel, following the fate of a husband & wife who decide, against all odds, to campaign against the Nazi regime. Their pursuit, capture, torture and trial at the hands of the Gestapo is taken from actual documented accounts adding a sense of realism to the narrative. This novel was more informative, and painted more of an image in my mind of Nazi Germany than any history lesson.

What do You think about Alone In Berlin (1946)?

This book was incredible. It makes me think of Tolstoy, but also Jonathan Franzen.
