Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean is a graphic novel which focuses on the journey Earhart made across the Atlantic in 1928. The story is told from the perspective of the character Grace. Grace's mother called her "Nosy Rosy" because she is always in everybody's business. Earhart shows up to Grace's town, Trespassey, Newfoundland. The town is a buzz with the excitement of Earhart launching her journey in this small ocean-side town. Grace follows Earhart around and is completely intrigued by her. She asks her one day if she can interview her for the local paper. Grace interview's Earhart. Earhart explains to Grace that her love of flying came at a very early age. There are several struggles with The Friendship, Earhart's plane. On June 17, 1928 Grace wakes up and rushes down to the harbor to see Amelia before she flies away. The excitement has dwindled for the other townspeople because of the struggles up to this point. Grace does not make it to the harbor in time to say goodbye. Grace is worried that Ameila does not have enough fuel to make it across the Atlantic Ocean. A few days later Grace receives a telegram from Amelia informing her that the flight was successful. Grace is ecstatic with the news that she made it safely and that Amelia reached out to her. Grace publishes an article in the local newspaper about the journey. As the story draws to a close it shows Grace as an adult working as a secretary at a newspaper. She reads an article on day of how Amelia Earhart was lost at sea. This story is a great mix of fiction and factual information. It allows a more fun storyline for students who are wanting to learn about Amelia Earhart. This story is set in Halifax and tells the story of Amelia's preparation for her trip across the Atlantic Ocean, through the eyes of a young girl. By putting the story in a youngster's perspective, the history seems more relevant to children. The graphic novel concept makes the story more interesting and easier to read. I also thought it was interesting to use only B/W with blue accents to emphasize the ocean. The author also includes notes and a bibliography - these could be resources for more research.
