Amor Y Otras Palabras Extrañas (2014) - Plot & Excerpts

Josie reminds me of Sheldon. That was my first thought: maybe more like Amy, nevertheless special in a good way. This book is really one of its kind when it comes to the style and writing. The story itself is quite mundane and predictable, yet captivating of course. Funny with its very own language. Very understandable and putting things in context and clarification. I liked it very much. But there was a part where I strongly felt irritated, which is a job well done by the author. You wanted to protect Josie from her sister's ideas and Kate's to-be-husband.Thumbs up! I have to begin this review with the disclaimer that I know the author, Erin McCahan, and grew up in the town she describes in this novel...so I was predisposed to love this book. But even if that wasn't the case, I would have enjoyed this novel. The comparisons to John Green and Rainbow Rowell are apt, but to me, this reminded me of the best kind of John Hughes 80s teen films, updated for a new millennium. Think "Sixteen Candles" with texting, only a lot better than that sounds. My only quibble is that I really did think that Josie's sister's fiancé was a jerk, and I'm not sure he redeemed himself enough by the end--though I appreciated the way McCahan shows us that Josie needs to come to grips with her own jerkiness first. A fun, romantic read.
