An Affair With Mr. Kennedy (2012) - Plot & Excerpts

Finally a romance novel where the heroine is described as eccentric it is a valid description. For her family as well. The setting was interesting as the story is set during the beginning of the industrial age in Victorian London. The hero is not of traditional peerage managing an estate or the new wealthy businessman. The story demonstrates how he is singularly focused on his role at Scotland Yard combating criminals. The romance did not follow the same old boring trope which is a blessing. I did think the novel was about 75 pages too long. I am glad the final battle...an subsequent thwarting of the final crime... was not drawn out. There seems a lot of unrealistic plot for one romance novel. Dead bodies, anarchist, gun battles, explosions, horse and car chases, more gun battles, more explosions, like a Michael Bay movie. And like a Michael Bay movie some elements were not realistic and it was too long. I may peruse other titles in the series some time in the distant future. I have wanted to read this book for a very long time, but the price was a bit steep for an unknown author (at least unknown to me). So I put it on my wish list and waited for the price to drop. I am glad it did - otherwise I may never have read the book. I really liked Ms. Stone's writing style. I thought the story flowed nicely, the plot was interesting and fast moving. There was a lot of action - both in and out of the bedroom. And amid all this action is a truly sweet romance. Zak and Cassie are both extremely likable characters - they are both accepting of each other's lives and enhance each other. The chemistry between them is red hot. I especially liked Cassie's family - they are smart and quirky. I also liked how Cassie forgave Zak quickly and didn't drag it out. That gets old fast. My only compliant would be the lack of the I love you's. It is implied and even thought - but never spoken. I want that in my romance books. Oddly enough, this is the second book in a row I have read without a verbal declaration - I hope this isn't going to be a new trend!I don't think I will be reading the next book - Rafe didn't impress me in this book - I read the blurb & preview for the next book and the reviews. I am a sucker for second chance romances - but I prefer a misunderstanding causing them to be separated. And from what I read - he broke it off and he doesn't seem to be pining for his lost love - unless he is just punishing himself by sleeping with whores and partying - considering he knows why he left - I sincerely doubt it. That is just not the kind of hero I want. But I will keep a lookout for future books by Ms Stone - she is really a gifted story teller.
