I finished reading this book and immediately burst into tears - the kind of tears that you cry in the presence of great art. Hilma Wolitzer is such a wonderful writer. An Available Man has all the elements of fiction that make me want to read a novel. There's narrative pull, character development, and mastery of the form - and the book is so smart and so genuine that it transcends the written word. I loved it. It made me want to write fiction. Edward becomes an available man after his wife Bee dies. He struggles through dating via a personal ad and rekindling an old lost love until he finally finds love in an unlikely source. A couple quotes I liked:"And her mother was alive and sentient, which preserved Bee's status as someone's child."" . . . reading seemed to him like the last stronghold of privacy in a group-crazed society."
The cover of this book really appeals to me. I am looking forward to reading it.
