An Uncommon Whore (2010) - Plot & Excerpts

"As a general rule, you won't find the love of your life while you're on your knees under a table." -- Helios DayspringPasha is a slave, whoring for travelers at the most dangerous bar on Warlan. He has no memory, no future of his own, yet deep inside Pasha knows that that he is meant for better things. The day that Pasha spots the dangerous pirate in the bar, he knows that he mustn't let the stranger slip away, regardless of what he must do to attract his attention.Captain Griffin Hawke spent the greater part of a decade searching for his lost king, only to find Helios Dayspring crouched between his knees, swathed in the robes and shackles of a whore. Though he is appalled by the downfall of his king, the hardened officer finds himself falling for the allure of the sensual creature who has taken his place. Returning Helios to his position on the throne is the only right thing to do, yet Griffin knows that in doing so, he risks losing his lover forever."A whore is a whore is a whore, unless he's something else completely. I guess I must be an uncommon whore." -- Helios DayspringAmazing! The stories written by Belinda McBride are truly unique, full of such magic in their narration, sometimes I think that momentslifehacker characters' life could be full of sadness and pain, but Ms McBride can speaks about them lightly, while still managing to hit right in the reader. An Uncommon Whore is an erotic sci-fi novel, which also tells a wonderful story of love between two men who meet after many years and after both of them lived terrible experiences that have changed them; the only thing that maybe could be positive after everything is that their changes will help them to love each other in a different way, more complete, which maybe in their past pride, inexperience and social constraints had not permitted.Pasha is a slave with no memory of his past, to his master's wishes he's a sex slave and must prostitute himself, but despite his degrading reality, repeated washing of brains and the chip that was implanted in order to force him to obey his master, he still keep of thinking that his life has another purpose, something important and that escapes him. Pasha is actually King Helios, disappeared from his home planet after a terrible war at the hands of his enemies. A King whose research from his faithful have never ceased.Captain Griffin, for years, lived undercover and he is the leader of his research and when he finds Helios he can't believe it. The appearance of Helios/Pasha is undoubtedly more alluring than ever, his memory is erased, but his heart recognizes Griffin, he knows in his heart that Griffin is his salvation.Theirs is a beautiful love story: full of strong feelings and physical attraction, beautifully narrated by the author, tenderness and eroticism, passion, trust and deep friendship, complicity and love.Everything is told so disenchanted and sometimes slightly ironic from the viewpoint of Helios, how he faces his slave's life, how he lives his discovery to be a King, without memory of his planet or about the terrible battles that he faced to save his people, and a love for the man who has been the most important person in his life, but with whom there has always been some boundary that brought them to the contrast.I loved Griffin's character too, proud and protective and lethal. He truly loves Helios, but he's afraid that the feelings of his former mistress aren't real, that Helios can be affected by his loss of memory, and he doesn't want to take advantage of the situation.Really beatiful and I can't wait to read the next book about them. Thanks to Netgalley and Loose Id for the book.RATING: 4 starsTITLE: An Uncommon WhoreAUTHOR: Belinda McBrideSERIES: Un Uncommon Whore #1PUBLISHER: Loose IdBellissimo! Ringrazio Netgalley e la Loose Id per il libro.VOTO: 4 stelle ‘An Uncommon Whore’ is a really interesting book, and just like there is nothing “common” about Pasha the slave who makes his master a living by being a whore, there is not much “common” about this story. It's set in the far future on various planets and a few space stations, but the focus isn't on the technology, it's on people struggling with power, politics, and relationships. They just happen to live in the future.Pasha has been a slave for years. At least that is all he remembers. And yet, a voice deep down inside him tells him he is meant to be somewhere else, even to be someone else. His current master isn’t overly cruel, and Pasha is sort of grateful for that. But when they walk into the most dangerous bar on the desert plant Warlan and Pasha spots a man who looks like a pirate, Pasha knows there is more to the rogue than meets the eye. He very cleverly engineers a meeting, and his life changes forever.Captain Griffin Hawke may look like a pirate, but he is a former royal guard with a mission. His people were betrayed and their planet overrun by aliens, and Griffin has been working tirelessly not only to help the refugees build a new home, but to find their lost king. When he realizes Pasha the whore is that man, he does everything in his power to get him off Warlan, have the slave chip that kept wiping his memory removed, and return him to his rightful place on the throne. Griffin knows he risks losing the man he loves to his position for the second time, but he is honorable enough to deal with that risk and do what he thinks is right, no matter the personal cost to him.The story that follows is one of enduring love, a fight to return the king’s memories, and a need for both men to figure out how to relate to each other under these circumstances. As the details unravel it becomes clear they have never before managed to do so, but after their individual suffering, each in their own way, and the five-year-long separation, many things have changed. Realizing that and making things work are still two very different things, and I was fascinated by every step they took.If you like science fiction and space opera that focus on people and their struggles more than technological or alien dangers, if two hot men who are deeply in love but have no idea how to make a relationship work sound interesting, and if you’re looking for a read that is very dark in places, yet carries a message of love and hope, then you will probably enjoy this novel. I’m glad there are another two volumes to read (so far).
