Ancient Gonzo Wisdom: Interviews With Hunter S. Thompson (2009) - Plot & Excerpts
Let me start with the negatives. This is a collection of interviews and articles on Hunter. If the interviewer themselves had talent, knowledge about Hunter, and a certain level of hipness, then the articles are/ were worth reading. If not, well... you have a lot of repetitively-maddening, obvious questions (ex. the kazillion times Hunter is asked about Garry Trudeau's parody of him) and some outright blunders (TWICE Hunter is referred to as "Patron-drinking." While he might drink SOME tequila, I guess, any fan or casual observer should know his REAL drink of choice [hint-- it's IN THE COVER PHOTO of this book!].)Also, while it's kind of cool to read the transcript of Hunter's college lectures, they were definitely meant to be heard, NOT read. Hunter likes to use sarcasm and violent language a lot, so it's hard to tell when he's pretending he wants to kill a student who asks a question he finds dumb and when he really does. However, since this IS a large book FULL of interviews, and most of them give sufficient space for a rambling, angry/ insightful answer by Hunter, you DO end up learning a lot about him while simultaneously being entertained and realizing American politics and politicians can best be approached by his method of surrealism, righteous anger, and Armageddon semantics (because they truly are a sad, sickly, corrupt, terrifying pack of evil jackals). Thompson's shining Gonzo Intellect is displayed here with humor and insight. Thompson was a seer, a visionary, an immovable force of which our culture will have to contend with for decades to come. His interviews read like his prose - evidence that what you read in print was the Good Doctor himself without pretense, without a mask. The earth's axis has shifted since his departure and we are all at a loss with his absence.

Some good interviews here, especially the one with PJ O'Rourke.
