In this first book of the new YA series Star Crossed, Logan McRae starts out as an average high school sophomore. She yearns for the cute guy, avoids the snarky editor of the school paper, and misses her mother, a pro golfer who is always on tour. Everything changes the day she digs through her mom's things and finds a book called Fearless Astronomy. Within days, she uses the horoscope's personality insights to get that cute guy interested, and help her friends with their objects of desire as well. At the same time, their school is being terrorized by a group of thugs known as the Gears of War, and as Logan's knack for astrology causes her popularity to skyrocket, she catches the attention of the Gears. And not in a good way.[return][return]Starting out, this book didn't grab me. It's so... teeny-bopper. Even when I was a teenager, I couldn't have related to these characters or their situations. A few plot issues grated on me, especially how Logan becomes popular so quickly and that the Gears regard her as a real threat. I paused to roll my eyes more than once. By about midway, though, I fell more into the rhythm and allowed myself to regard it as a mindless read and enjoyed the rest. I saw the end coming, but I didn't mind it. It's rather like cozy mystery: you see how the pieces will fall together, but observing that process is part of the fun.[return][return]Also, it really amused me that the Capricorn character in the book had the exact same reaction to astrology that I did. The description in the back even described me dead-on. Kind of weird, really. Maybe that helped me to enjoy the book more. Even though this book was about a sophomore, I enjoyed it enough to finish it. I think that I would have liked it more if I were not 22 years young, but 15. Hill has written a well rounded book about a young girl named Logan McRae. Logan has been gunning for a summer writing camp trip. Logan finds an astrology book that belonged to her mother and after reading it, she puts it to good use. She now has a column with the school news-paper and she even has the hottest guy in school. But trying to impress her teachers, finding out who The Gears are-a group dedicated on terrorizing the school, and maintaining a boyfriend it hard for Logan. Can Logan handle being in the astrological lime-light?
