Autumn In The City Of Angels (2013) - Plot & Excerpts

What a great start to what I think will be a fantastic series! This book grabs you from the first page and doesn't release its grip. A post-apocalyptic urban fantasy with hints of sci-fi and a good dose of romance, this is the perfect read for fans of young adult fiction. Set in Los Angeles, we follow the story of 17-year-old Autumn as she survives a world-wide plague that decimates all but 1% of the population. Authors Alexander and Melton (writing as Kirby Howell) really nail it with true-to-life characters, a fascinatingly terrifying landscape, and quick pacing that keeps you turning the pages. Can't wait to devour the next one. I got a copy of this from the authors a few months ago and only just got around to reading it (sorry!).Anyway.So when I started this book, I'd actually completely forgotten what it was about. It was like going into a book with no expectations, which was actually a lot of fun. I mean, I already knew I'd probably like it, seeing as the blurb had gotten my attention in the first place.I start reading it and I'm pretty quickly pulled into this horrifyingly amazing world of L.A. after a massive plague takes out 99% of the world's population. Autumn is alone and scared. She turns to a group of people who look friendly initially, but looks can be deceiving. She barely makes it out alive. What I really liked about this was that it had a more realistic feel to it than a lot of dystopias do nowadays. I mean, there's the usual short supply of water and food and lack of communication devices, but it was more than that. There's real descriptions of what it would be like to be on the run from a big, scary group of people out to get you while having very few resources whatsoever. They mentioned some things I'd never thought of before, and I read these books all the time. So it gave it all a more real feeling that I very much appreciated. I excitedly kept reading, even though I have other important things that need doing. And then the plot twist happened. In that single plot twist, I probably lost 50% of my enthusiasm. It wasn't a bad plot twist, per se, but it felt like it was taking the easy way out or something. It went from feeling real to...not. I was a little disappointed in that, but I kept going because I was nearly done by that point. And it ended fairly well. I was just disappointed with that one thing.
