Αυτό είναι μόλις το δεύτερο βιβλίο του τρομερού Ντόναλντ Γουέστλεϊκ που διαβάζω, μετά το ξεκαρδιστικό Βοήθεια! Με κρατούν φυλακισμένο που είχα διαβάσει πριν από τρία και πλέον χρόνια. Ο Γουέστλεϊκ έχει γράψει με το ψευδώνυμο Ρίτσαρντ Σταρκ την πασίγνωστη αστυνομική σειρά Πάρκερ και με το κανονικό του όνομα την σειρά Ντόρτμουντερ και διάφορα άλλα άλλων σειρών και εκτός σειρών. Είναι εντελώς ακατανόητο σε μένα γιατί δεν έχουν μεταφραστεί κάποια κλασικά του έργα που σίγουρα είναι πιο ποιοτικά από άλλα αστυνομικά που έχουν μεταφραστεί. Τουλάχιστον τα πρώτα δέκα βιβλία της σειράς Πάρκερ θα μπορούσαν κάλλιστα να μεταφραστούν από την σειρά ΒΙΠΕΡ, μιας και γράφτηκαν την δεκαετία του '60 και είναι μικρά σε μέγεθος. Το Πως να κλέψετε μια τράπεζα είναι το δεύτερο βιβλίο της σειράς όπου πρωταγωνιστεί ο Ντόρτμουντερ. Ο Ντόρτμουντερ είναι ο κλασικός αποτυχημένος (και άτυχος θα έλεγα) μικροεγκληματίας που τώρα κάνει μια απάτη με κάτι εγκυκλοπαίδειες. Κάποια στιγμή θα δεχτεί την πρόταση του Κελπ, ενός διαρρήκτη αυτοκινήτων και φίλου του, να κάνουν ένα μεγάλο κόλπο. Να κλέψουν μια τράπεζα. Και όταν λέμε να κλέψουν μια τράπεζα, εννοούμε να κλέψουν ολόκληρη την τράπεζα! Γιατί η τράπεζα είναι προσωρινά εγκατεστημένη σε ένα ειδικό μεγάλο τροχόσπιτο μέχρι να φτιαχτεί το κτίριο όπου θα στεγαστεί. Στο κόλπο θα συμμετάσχει ο Μερτς, εξαιρετικός οδηγός και μικροαπατεώνας, η μάνα του, που πρέπει να φοράει συνεχώς ένα κολάρο για να αποσπάσει χρήματα από μια ασφαλιστική εταιρεία, ο Βίκτορ, πρώην αστυνομικός του FBI που απολύθηκε (ή παραιτήθηκε) από αυτό λόγω κάποιων εμμονών του, ο Χέρμαν Χ, ένας μαύρος ακτιβιστής που έγινε κλειδαράς και φυσικά η κοπέλα του Ντόρτμουντερ, η Μέι, που συνεχώς καπνίζει. Έτσι, όλοι αυτοί οι τύποι θα πρέπει να βρουν ειδικό σασί, ρόδες και ένα φορτηγό για να μεταφέρουν το τροχόσπιτο, θα πρέπει να ξεφορτωθούν τους φύλακες που θα είναι μέσα, θα πρέπει να βρουν μέρος για να το κρύψουν και θα πρέπει να ανοίξουν το νέας τεχνολογίας χρηματοκιβώτιο για να κάνουν την μπάζα της ζωής τους. Όπως μπορείτε να φανταστείτε, πολλά πράγματα δεν θα γίνουν όπως θα ήθελαν να γίνουν... Η γραφή του Γουέστλεϊκ είναι φυσικά ευχάριστη και πολύ ωραία, το χιούμορ καλό αλλά όχι για όλα τα γούστα, οι ατάκες που βγάζουν γέλιο σίγουρα αρκετές, οι σκηνές δράσης ενδιαφέρουσες και αστείες ταυτόχρονα και οι χαρακτήρες όλοι συμπαθητικοί και αστείοι με τον τρόπο τους. Δεν είναι για όλα τα γούστα, αν θέλετε μια κωμικοτραγική ιστορία με μικροεγκληματίες που σχεδιάζουν να κάνουν την μπάζα της ζωής τους, αλλά λόγω αστοχιών και ατυχιών δεν θα πετύχουν αυτά που θέλουν, τότε η ιστορία είναι ό,τι πρέπει, αν θέλετε να διαβάσετε ένα σοβαρό αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα, ή διαλέξτε τα βιβλία της σειράς Πάρκερ ή κάτι άλλο. Έχει γίνει και ταινία, το 1974, με πρωταγωνιστή τον George C. Scott (Dr. Strangelove, Patton κλπ).
We all miss Donald Westlake, the creator of so many delightful books of which this is a fine example in the Dortmunder series. Dortmunder is a thief and con-man (he's been collecting deposits on encyclopedias when he runs into a little trouble). This time he's approached by his friend Kelp, who, with his his ex-FBI agent nephew, Victor, have the perfect bank robbery all lined up. It seems while a new branch bank building is being built, the bank has moved across the street to a mobile home. The bank usually doesn't worry about theft since cash is in the safe (damn those credit cards and checks) only Thursday nights and with seven guards and a sophisticated alarm system, what's to worry. Well you no doubt can guess their plan. It's to install wheels and drive off with the entire building. As is typical with Westlake caper books, just as things seem to be going right, they go off the rails. The ending is worthy of slapstick comedy; in fact, this could make a great movie. ("Could" being operative word. Apparently they tried with George C Scott and Joanna Cassidy, but it was a bomb.) . The charm of these books has less to do with plot than the conversations and interplay between the characters, not to mention sarcastic portrayals of certain professions, mundane examples of how we move through life.

Andy Kelp darkens Dortmunder's doorstep with a proposition: rob the Capitalists' and Immigrants' Trust bank. The bank is under renovation and business is currently being done out of a mobile home. Together with his usual crew of Murch, Murch's Mom, Kelp, and some newcomers, Dortmunder plans to make off with the entire bank, trailer and all. How hard could it be?I should create a shelf called Why The Hell Isn't This Still in Print? Westlake's early Dortmunder books would be all over it. Bank Shot is a comedic caper, as Dortmunder's usually are. Victor and Herman X, the newcomers, fit in pretty well with Dortmunder's quirky crew. The plot had a lot of twists and complications. While I knew things wouldn't go Dortmunder's way, I had no idea to what extent.Westlake's writing in this one is pretty damn good. It continues to amaze me how he can write Dortmunder's comic capers and the Parker books under his Richard Stark pseudonym with such different styles. His comedic timing is great. Also, I caught references to the Continental Op, Elmore Leonard, and Parker in the text.I highly recommend not only Bank Shot but the Dortmunder series as a whole.

Most capers include toting guns into a bank, holding tellers at gun point and making a mad dash for the getaway car. In this Dortmunder outing, our anti-heroes skip all this pomp and circumstance by simply stealing the entire bank. What makes this particular book a good one is the involvement of family members and Dortmunder's girlfriend May.Another hilarious character (and family member) is introduced who enjoys recording all the action onto a tape player. Since the caper is not as exciting in real life, Victor simply makes up larger-than-life scenes and up-plays all the characters around him. Some of the funniest moments in the book are toward the end when we get quite a new view of the story as we listen in on Victor recording his narrative on the caper.I started listening to the Dortmunder series a few years ago but many of the older books just recently became available on Audible. What I love about these books is the characters are so stuck in their ways, they rarely change so it does not matter much where you jump in. Enjoy this book on its own or in series order.-Bill

"just the best dry wit.."The Dortmunder Novels number at least six, though I haven't checked lately. This one is number two. The novels are basically about some minor criminals and Dortmunder himself plans the capers.Dortmunder is good at it and his plans are detailed. Donald Westlake appears to write the stories quite seriously and with a dry realism that almost connects them to real life. One can imagine the quite accidental things that people do and the silly mess-ups they cause. In his dry way Westlake makes them exceedingly hilarious.One finds oneself laughing loudly and uproariously at quite ordinary 'accidents of omissions', in other words people simply forgetting what they should do. Little events occur that seem to cause the most unfortunate results.Donald Westlake is well into the same area as Carl Hiaasen; Elmore Leonard is another, however Westlake's stories are of a lighter nature. He joins with similar writers of ridiculous, 'almost normal' events; 'lightweight criminality'; and you will definitely love his stuff.~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~January 2014I picked up the book which I had intended to give someone, but never did.Originally I read it on a Kindle and found it so amusing that I've now read it again.As it says on the cover, if you intend to rob the bank which happens to temporarily be in a trailer, why not take the whole bank?What happens thereafter, the police search, attempts to open the safe, what transpires with the trailer, are very funny.
