I love how Gail Simone has reimagined Batgirl. I didn't have an awful lot of experience with her character before she was paralyzed, but I always got the sense that she was like Jubilee from the X-Men; kinda like Batman wished she would just leave him alone. This Batgirl is overcoming her paralysis, moving out on her own (with a transgendered roommate, no less!), and facing her personal demons.It's solid comic book writing, and the crossovers with the Court of Owls and Death of the Family were handled nicely. I really liked her confrontation with the Joker--her inner traumas surfaced and momentarily turned her into a hero who is every bit as intimidating as Batman. I know Simone is a bit of a rock star in the world of lady comic book fans, and she totally should be. Such a well done volume. From the adventure that turns into a heartfelt understanding between Batgirl and Catwoman; to Babs reliving and having to face her worst fears; to the touching reunion between Babs and Alysia; and to its climactic and satisfying, yet bittersweet ending, this book is a great read. The Batgirl series continues to be rock solid, and with the best story arc in this run yet, you can't go wrong buying this.
