Batman, Vol. 1: The Court Of Owls (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
3.5/4Man, am I sick of owls...I kind of expected more from this. I mean, you only hear wonders from everyone, you expect something great. It was just ok. Batman is not really my cup of tea, he is always so dark and intense and everything is so dramatic that I think he could do with a bit of humor. Being as this is a reboot, I think it works fairly ok to show new readers who is who. I don't know much about the backstory of Grayson but I don't really need to know more right now. Plus, this a Batman story. The problem is I didn't care much about the freaking Court of Owls. Secret societies acting like pyschos without a reason bore me. But if there's something I really like was Batman's inner monologues about the city and stuff. So I'll just wait until we get rid of the owl story and hope it gets to more interesting stories. I picked this up at my local library, along with volume 2, to check out DC's New 52 because I grew up reading Marvel primarily. To be fair though I've always been a big Batman fan since middle school. This was a good addition to the old comics I've read and movies, shows, and games. I thought it was a good starting point too for new readers, although it doesn't go into detail about anyone in the Bat-family. You don't need to know them, except maybe who Nightwing is, as it doesn't feature any of them either. So there's that.Snyder's writing and Capullo's art are on point for the most part. The story is tight and the pictures are sharp, but one negative I had was the fight scenes were a little weak. Batman seems to be beaten senseless at times, but the panels don't really reflect that. He just looks like he's getting punched in the face and gut a few times, then suddenly he can barely walk and talk. I always imagine Batman to be a lot tougher and resilient than that. Where were his gadgets and ninja-like fight skills? He should be able to take a guy like Talon with ease.Overall a great read though. I'll be diving into volume 2 immediately.
