I read books 2 and 3 in this series before I read this one. I'm glad because this is my favorite. I loved both Cat and Alexi. Alexi intrigued me from his appearances in the other two books, but this is his and Cat's story, and he shines. He's my kind of hero--gifted with languages and disguises, charming, loyal (in his own way), intelligent, daring, and willing to risk everything for the one person who's his soul mate. Cat is a dynamite heroine--self-sufficient, determined, intelligent, and willing to risk everything--almost--to get revenge.If Joan Wilder from the movie Romancing the Stone were a real person, I think she'd be proud to write this kind of gritty, realistic western romance. Lori Austin has reinvented the western historical romance with this series, and this book is not to be missed. 4.5♥sBEAUTY AND THE BOUNTY HUNTER grabbed me from the beginning and didn't let me go. It's the tale of two people scarred by their pasts. But can Cat let go of her past and find love again? Can Alexi open up enough to let Cat see the real him?I loved Alexi and the secret way he loved Cat. He always looked out for her, even when she really didn't deserve it. I loved the foreign-language endearments that he would deliberately misinterpret for her. He's a different kind of hero--he's a con man. But he has a good heart.Cat, on the other hand, is the reason I didn't round up to 5♥s. I didn't always like the way she treated Alexi, and she was very stubborn. But she was kick-butt, and some of her behavior can be excused by what she went through. Some of which we don't find out about until near the end.The book was fast-paced and full of suspense, danger, and mystery.The end was satisfying and heart-warming.Did I mention how much I loved Alexi?
