Being George Washington (2011) - Plot & Excerpts

This book is a confused compilation of historical accounts, (presented in an impossible to follow, chronologically random fashion), extreme literary license (intended to bring the history to life), and Limbaugh-like political rants. While my political conservatism tends to have me agree with most of the points that Beck makes in the book, the manner in which they are made left much to be desired.Given the depth and breadth of the subject matter, the potential for this book was unlimited. Unfortunately, it seemed more like a half-hearted attempt to opportunistically monetize the memory of George Washington.I found chapters 12 and 13 to be bright spots making the time spent on the book seem more worthwhile. This is the best book on George Washington I have ever read, and I have read some good ones. It is not comprehensive. Rather it dramatizes key events in Washington's life without dwelling on minutia. Interspersed are chapters that explain what Washington learned from these experiences and what each of us can learn as well. Sage advice, personal and political. Beck chose the right events. The dramatizations are compelling. My favorite part was Washington's speech to his officers at Newburgh, New York. His battle-hardened troops were ready to make him king or else start a civil war because Congress hadn't honored its promises to them. When Washington's carefully crafted speech didn't touch them, he put on his glasses to read a letter to them. He said, "Gentlemen, you will permit me to put on my spectacles, for I have not only grown gray but almost blind in service to my country." These warriors were brought to tears. They followed his wishes. Freedom was given a chance.
