Benny And Penny In The Big No-No! (2009) - Plot & Excerpts

Benny and Penny in the Big No NO!, by Geoffrey Hayes, is a well-illustrated and fun book for students to read. I thought this book was very cute and showed the idea that friendships can start in very strange situations at times. Such as being in a fit and then resolving the fight at the end of the book through friendship. This would be a great book for struggling readers because of the comic like affect and the illustrations to go along with the words on the pages. This could also be introduced in a classroom for the start of a unit or lesson on sharing and resolving conflicts between friends. Overall I would love to have this children’s book available to students in my classroom. In this graphic novel, Benny and Penny discover they have a new neighbor. When Benny looses his pail they go over the fence to see if their new neighbor stole it. Benny and Penny find the pail in their neighbor's yard. The neighbor is using it to make mud pies and immediately begins screaming and yelling when she sees Benny and Penny ruining her mud pies and stealing her pail. Benny and Penny rush over the fence and make it back on their side. However, they notice that Benny's pail was in their sandbox the whole time. Next they realize that they stole their neighbor's pail. They go back over the fence and apologize. In the end, they have a mud pie fight and become good friends.I would use this book in my first grade classroom. I believe it is important to expose all students to graphic novels and a different format of writing. This book would be a great teaching tool when discussing speech bubbles and thought bubbles. This story would also help students learn about dialogue and about punctuation. In addition, this story would be great to use to discuss talking other people's things and stealing.
