Between The Devil And Desire (2008) - Plot & Excerpts

I listened to this as an audio book. Nicely done. Wonderfully written. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because the introspection dragged in some places, slowing the pace too much and sometimes repetitious. This is one of a series (it's Book #2) about a group of adults who are bound together by their childhood experiences. They were a group of street urchins taken in by Charles' Dickens' famous Fagin character. The hero in this one is the grown up Artful Dodger, now known as Jack Dodger. It's an exciting book, romantic, daring, and sexy. The narration was wonderfully done -- veddy British! Lorraine Heath is an accomplished writer and certainly in her element with this charming tale! The second installation of the "Scoundrels of St. James" series, "Between the Devil and Desire" continues with Jack's story and is just as endearing as the first. When the wicked Jack Dodger is suddenly named the guardian of a young lord, the up-tight widow is obviously concerned about his potential influence on her child. I loved how Jack's character developed from someone who only cared about money to include love for Olivia and Henry in his life. His tragic childhood is further explained and his search for why Lovingdon chose him kept me at the edge of my seat.Olivia is a very over-protective mother and a stickler for propriety and rules. It was wonderful seeing how Jack brought such a change in her, as well as helped build Henry's confidence in himself. The resolution at the end of the book is a great conclusion to this romance that started from mutual distrust and gradually built up through respect and friendship. We once again see Feagan's brood band together in a time of need, which had me looking forward to more of such moments in the future. All the loose ends were addressed and I was saddened that there is no epilogue dated when Henry is older.
