Between The Duke And The Deep Blue Sea (2012) - Plot & Excerpts
This book reads like a comedy of errors. LOL It was a fairly quick read with plenty of twists and turns. I did have trouble keeping up with the volume of characters initially introduced, but felt I knew them by the end.The newly minted Duke of Kress, Alexander Barclay, awakens after a bachelor party featuring way too much absinthe to find he's lost his fortune, but with very few other memories. The Prince Regent is not amused. As punishment, he orders Alex to his remote estate in Cornwall to fix the falling down ruin and to marry ASAP.Enroute, Alex comes across Roxanne Vanderhaven, the Countess of Paxton, hanging off a cliff face after being left there by her husband. She convinces Alex to take her with him to his home, and under an assumed name she plots revenge on her husband as well as making plans for her future. Something Alex wants to help with. I liked the hero, but the lady-protagonist (I refuse to call her a heroine) was utterly ridiculous. She was unnecessarily contrary, insisted she was so practical as a tin miners daughter when she was anything but, such a frustrating character with a massive chip on her shoulder to boot. She spent far too much time insisting the hero was afraid to love when there was little to no evidence to support. Not impressed.
