Black Elk's Vision: A Lakota Story (2010) - Plot & Excerpts
This biography reminded me strongly of Bruchac's Crazy Horse biography. Equal weight is given to his visions and the invasion of the Wasichu. The photographs give excellent primary source documentation of the slaughter of the bison, the encroachment of the trains and towns, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and the massacre at Wounded Knee. Simply written and accessible for elementary and middle school. It has been two years since I read this book. IN spite of it being an excellent book, I didn't realize that I had already read it until I came to record it at Goodreads. I'm glad to have read it again--lots of interesting (and inspiring!) facts, photos, and great illustrations. June 1,2012: What a great true story. The photos and beautiful illustrations added even more to this story.
