If there had been more of a Science Fiction feel to this it would have got 5* but as it is it only got 4* and most of that was for the well written characters. The main storyline of Tristan's conversion from duty bound, easy going soldier to disillusioned prisoner and senses deprived at that was very well done. With plenty of emphasis on how the lack of sight changed everything for him from how he reacted to situations to how he felt about people. I just wish it wasn't the kind of story that could have taken place anywhere and any when. In fact he spaceships and the flashguns were about the only thing remotely science fiction about the story. I had read and enjoyed "Promises" by Marie Sexton, and thought I would give her sci-fi story a chance.Tristan is unhappy with his life. He's 'Prince' Rikard's plaything, and while he's Captain of the Guard, he's unsure about how much of leader he's able to be. When his ship is captured by Valero's pirate crew to ransom the Prince, he has to face his own uncertainties and uncomfortable questions about duty and loyalty.When Valero, a former soldier himself, begins his seduction of Tristan, he makes Tristan confront his own insecurities and fears. Tristan initially resists Valero's overtures, but after being betrayed by the Prince, finally sees the ironies of his situation and gives in to his desire for Valero.Sexton certainly knows the value of building up the anticipation in a story. And to make it even more compelling here, Tristan's temporary blindness adds another layer of sexual tension, since we learn about Valero through Tristan's sense of touch. And...then there's Tristan's other interest...which just turns up the heat several notches more! WOW!So..4 stars for a great little story that just doesn't quit.
